North Forney High School Student Earns Eagle Scout Distinction with Construction of a Weather Statio
Austin Begin, a senior at North Forney High School, recently completed the design, development and construction of a weather station at Brown Middle School as part of his Eagle Scout project. The weather station was constructed on the south side of Brown Middle School and has remote control capabilities from the Advanced Science classroom located in the building. Dawn Sheets, the Science Department Chair at Brown Middle School, was Begin’s Advanced Science Teacher in middle school and worked with him on the project.
Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Only four percent of Boy Scouts are granted the rank of Eagle Scout. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges and an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads and manages. Since its founding more than one hundred years ago, the Eagle Scout rank has been earned by almost 2.5 million young men.
All of the materials needed to complete Begin’s weather station were donated by Lowe's Home Improvement Store of Forney.
Begin started scouts in 2nd grade while attending Crosby Elementary School in Forney ISD. He has been in the Top Ten ranking of his class since his freshman year at North Forney High School. In addition, Begin is a Clarinet Section Leader for the Pride of Falcon Nation Band. He serves as the Secretary with National Honor Society and is an Advanced Placement (AP) Honor Scholar.
Begin is considering attending Texas A&M or Oklahoma University where he plans to study Atmospheric Sciences (Meteorology).
The Forney ISD Board of Trustees will recognize Begin for his Eagle Scout accomplishment at the December 2018 regular monthly board meeting.
