Forney High School Captures State Championship and Runner Up Titles
For the first time since the school opened, Forney High School has a state champion and a runner up in the same year. The Lady Jackrabbit softball team won their state title on Saturday, June 2 with a 4-1 victory over Richmond Foster in Austin, Texas and the Forney High School baseball team captured second place in the state championship baseball tournament on Saturday, June 9 in Round Rock, Texas. The Jackrabbits fell to Eaton 4-1 in the title game.
The state championship title won by the Lady Jackrabbits is the first state title in any sport for Forney High School.
The Jackrabbits baseball team had a very successful year finishing the season with an overall record of 29-14 including their win in the state semi-final game over Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial. In addition, senior pitcher Mason Englert was drafted in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Texas Rangers and set a new state record for most consecutive scoreless innings pitched.
Forney ISD plans to celebrate both teams and all of the players and coaches at the start of the 2018-19 school year. Several members of both teams play on select baseball and softball teams and their seasons are in full swing during the summer. Players and coaches from both teams have asked that the recognition for their accomplishments be held at the start of the new school year to ensure that as many players, managers and coaches as possible can be recognized by the District and the Forney ISD Board of Trustees.
The District is in the process of putting together a celebration for the Monday, August 27, 2018 Board of Trustees meeting. The District stated that additional information about the celebration will be announced in August.
In addition, both teams will be honored during the Forney High School homecoming parade in September and every player from the softball team will be presented with a state championship ring during a halftime recognition at one of the Forney High School home football games this fall.
